Untitled 2025 Ink on paper (Meret Sophie Preiß) Audio (Tim Abels) 42 x 29,7 cm 8:37 min
Our collaborative work was on view at Neue ArT / 9. Kunstmesse Dresden from 26.9.-28.9.2025.
In search of ways to combine visual elements with sound, we entered into an artistic dialogue. The starting point for this work was an ink drawing by Meret Sophie Preiß. Tim Abels developed an electroacoustic composition that interacts with the drawing.

Ghost in the machine 2025 Empty oil barrel, transducer, amplifier board, audio (continuous) 60 x 60 x 90 cm
An autoencoder, an artificial neural network, was used to develop the sound. The input was a field recording of a child playing and calling for his mother. The encoding and decoding were based on a machine learning model that was not trained for this type of input.

2025 Aluminum tubes, ear protection 1.63 x 1.63 x 1.63 m
The starting point for this work is an exploration of John Cage’s piece 4’33“, which consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. In analogy to the opening and closing of the piano lid, which marks the passage of time in Cage’s piece, the cube construction limits a space of 4.33 m³. Cage’s temporal approach is thus transformed into a spatial one. By putting on ear protection, the enclosed space can be experienced as silent. In doing so, one’s own body enters into a relationship with the surrounding space and other visitors.

Ceramic tile, broken and engraved
120 x 47 cm
The engraved lines are derived from the frequency spectra of the
tiles excited to vibrate. These spectra differ depending on the size
of the tile and are represented by the distances between the lines
which creates a visual reference to the sound that emancipates itself from it.

3 channel video installation
ongoing
In this work, possibilities of visual and auditory representation of energetic niveau are questioned.
An algorithm controls the constant redistribution of the same amount of energy to three video channels. These react in different ways to the change in their energetic content, whereby the link between image and sound becomes clearly perceptible. The activity of the individual channels changes, depending on the amount of energy emitted or absorbed, sometimes rapidly, sometimes gradually.
A completely autonomous system is created that continually takes on new forms without repeating itself or ending. In its way of passing on energy to the respective neighbouring channel, it resembles a living organism or a coherent ecosystem.
